OfficeQ Prerequisites and Runtime Requirements

The computer hardware and operating system requirements for running OfficeQ are basically identical to those of QuickBooks itself.  That being said, there are a few considerations you should be aware of.

Computer Hardware and Operating System

DataBlox OfficeQ runs in Microsoft Windows environments only.  Currently there is no version for Apple computers.  Microsoft Windows 2000, XP, Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8 as well as newer servers are all supported - including 64 bit versions.

For large QuickBooks files (.QBW file over 200MB), the combination of QuickBooks, the QuickBooks database layer, OfficeQ, and one of our sample Access or Excel applications can require a lot of memory to perform well.  For optimum performance, we recommend larger amounts of memory in this case - at least 2GB and possibly 4GB as well as a newer faster processor.

For DataBlox's sample applications - either Microsoft Access 2000 (or later) or Microsoft Excel 2000 (or later) are required.  There are no advantages to running newer versions than 2000 - although they are fully supported.

QuickBooks Versions

OfficeQ runs correctly with most flavors of QuickBooks (Pro, Premier, Accountant, Enterprise) for years 2005 and newer - including all multiuser and server versions.  It does not support Mac or Online versions.

The current version OfficeQ6 (33.x.x.x) includes support for all 2005 thru 2022 U.S. versions of QuickBooks as well as 2008 thru 2022 Canadian versions. Annually -  typically around the end of the year - DataBlox releases a new version that adds support for the new year.

Sometimes it's possible to install QuickBooks on a particular operating system and have it appear normal for interactive use - but the combination fails when used with a programming interface.  For example, Microsoft Windows Vista only supports QuickBooks 2007 (release5) and later and Microsoft Windows 7 only supports QuickBooks 2010 and newer.  All Intuit supported 64 bit versions are supported by OfficeQ.

Because the operating system was not available at the time earlier versions of QuickBooks shipped - there is no way for QuickBooks to warn that it does not full operate with that operating system.  If in doubt, check http://quickbooks.intuit.com/.

We support all combinations of operating system and QuickBooks that Intuit supports.  Fortunately, Intuit supplies several addon programs that use the same programming interfaces we use - so the reliability of OfficeQ is very high and should remain that way in the future.

QuickBooks Running State

OfficeQ requires that QuickBooks be running with the customer data file open when OfficeQ is run to read the data from the file.  For all practical purposes, this means that OfficeQ should be run from the same computer that generated the data.

You can either save the collected data directly to a database file - or save the data temporarily to a transfer (.QQT) file, which can then be moved to a different computer and/or processed later.  One procedure that some of our ISVs use is to install a minimal OfficeQ installation on their customer's computer to save the data to a .QQT file - then upload that .QQT file to a server where it is later processed.

It is sometimes possible to move a .QBW data file directly to another computer, and run QuickBooks and OfficeQ on that computer to extract data - but it does not always work and payroll data will never be accessible.

Extracting Payroll Information

To extract payroll data, an Intuit payroll subscription must be currently active on the computer containing the QuickBooks data file.  If a payroll subscription was previously used to create payroll data in the file - the data cannot be extracted unless a payroll subscription is active at the time of the extraction.

In addition, the user must allow OfficeQ to access personal data when the authorization dialog is presented (see Running to Authorize Extraction of Data).
